2016 Store Locator Plus Add Ons

 2012_NYE_Fireworks_(8331173703) (2)

A lot of things are underway for 2016 that will provide a vastly improved experience for our users and your customers.   Changes will be made to the add-on pack offerings that will simplify the product selection process and eliminate some confusion as to what to buy and what packs complement each other to obtain the best results.  Additionally, negotiations are underway with one of the most-talented WordPress and SaaS development teams in the world to bring a new and improved “Software As A Service” version of Store Locator Plus online.   We will also be expanding our support and technical team in-house at Charleston Software Associates.

Add On Packs

There will be a number of changes designed to simplify the add-on selection process, create a better and stable plug-in environment, reduce redundancy, and simplify our product cycle allowing us to focus on product improvements versus overhead and maintenance.

Legacy Add Ons

Starting in early 2016 , the legacy add-on packs will enter the first transition phase.  The plugins that are selected will only receive bug fixes and security patches going forward.   All of the Charleston Software Associates (Store Locator Plus author) products will be classified as legacy products over the next few months, For example:

  • Contact Extender
  • Directory Builder
  • Enhanced Map
  • Enhanced Results
  • Enhanced Search
  • Pages
  • Pro Pack
  • Tagalong
  • Widget Pack

Customers that have purchased these products will still have access to the downloads and will receive updates whenever a new security patch or bug fix is released.

New Add Ons

When the legacy products enter this transition phase, they will no longer be available as a separate stand alone purchase by new customers.    In their place we will have three core add-on packs in addition to a group of “ala-carte” third party add-on packs available for purchase.    We will be simplifying the add-on pack selection by offering just 3 options, Power Users, Enhanced Experience, and Premier.

Users of the legacy products can opt to retain their prior add-on packs and operate as normal.  However, users that wish to take advantage of the new add-ons, simplifying the installation process will need to purchase them as a new product package.   Once the packages are installed the legacy products can be removed. More details will be available and reminders sent as that date approaches.

Power Users

The forthcoming “Power” package add-on will include all of the features and functionality of the current Pro Pack, Tagalong, Pages, and Contact Extender add-on packs.  The focus of this add-on is the administrative side of location management as well as various features that tend to be utilized by the power user.  As part of this new offering the Pro Pack user-interface-related “Experience / View” setting, which determines the overall layout structure of the Store Locator Plus interface (map on left, right, below search form, etc.) will be moved into the forthcoming Experience add-on.

The Power add-on will be selling for $250 per-site one-time fee.

Experience

The Experience add-on, being released in early 2016, will include all the features of the user-interface-centric features of the various Store Locator Plus legacy add ons.   This new add-on will include the features of Enhanced Map, Enhanced Results, Enhanced Search, and the Widget Pack.   It will also inherit the Experience / View setting from the Pro Pack.    This add-on will also make it far easier to deploy the built-in plugin styles as you will only require one plugin-in to achieve most of the visual updates.

The Experience add-on will be selling for $250 per-site one-time fee.

Premier

Technically now a “new” plugin but one that will carry over from the legacy model to the new model, the Premier add-on will continue to be the flagship plugin where new “never been done before” features are added.    While the Power and Experience add-ons will occasionally see a new feature added, anything that is completely new and introduces more complex features to the product will appear in the Premier add-on.   The Premier add-on is only available to users with a Premier subscription.

Speaking of the Premier Subscription, users with an active subscription will get the new Power and Experience add-ons as soon as they are available and will have access to the prerelease versions of both products.   There are not changes anticipated for the Premier Subscription in 2016.   An exclusive first-response Premier Forum, access to our real-time Slack channels, and access to all plugins and themes crafted by Charleston Software Associates remains in the plan.

The Premier Subscription will retain the current $250 sign-up + $30/month pricing.

Third Party Add Ons

Due to our compensation agreements with third party authors, the third party plugins will remain online in their standard ala-carte form.   These plugins will have a new forum where all 3rd party plugin questions will be answered and supported by both the original author and, as needed, Charleston Software Associates.  The following plugins will remain as ala-carte options:

  • Extended Data Manager
  • Event Location Manager
  • Social Media Extender
  • Gravity Forms Integration
  • Gravity Forms Locations
  • MultiMap

Most third-party add-ons are priced at a $50 one-time fee.

End Of Life Offerings

The following offerings will be going away in 2016.

All Icon Packs will be replaced with a more efficient loading process to be introduced in 2016 and added to the Premier plugin.

The Experience Package is going away.  This will be replaced with the Experience plugin.

The Kitchen Sink Package is going, going, gone as a separate purchase.  Users wishing to get all of the nifty features and more should subscribe to the Premier Subscription as a one-year subscription. It is less than the price of the Kitchen Sink package and provides more benefits.

The SaaS Project

Work will begin in earnest on a subscription-based Store Locator Plus service.    This should not be confused with the Premier Subscription.  Purchases and subscribers  of the Premier Subscription will not be automatically enrolled in the SaaS system .   The SaaS (Software As A Service) product will allow companies to sign up via a new website and use a simplified interface for managing their locations and tweaking their user interface.    When everything is ready the user will be given a short JavaScript snippet or iFrame code to place on ANY site, not just WordPress sites.

This new service will look-and-feel much like the Store Locator Plus WordPress plugin with some big visual improvements.   However, users of this system will no longer need to worry about updates to ensure they have the latest version, backing up their locations, moving their installs from a staging to live site, or other management tasks related to maintaining their locator plugin.

Pricing is yet to be determined.   Initial models include a free tier for a handful of locations and $30/month for most sites.

Store Locator Plus updates to Widgets 4.3.03, Enhanced Search 4.3.02 and Directory Builder 4.3.01

bronze_workers_costa rica

Widgets for SLP Update

The Widget add-on version 4.3.03 tweaks the Search by State Widget to be more intuitive when the map is rendered. In previous versions, when a visitor to your site selected a state from the drop down menu the drop down box within the Enhanced Search form on your map page would continue to reflect the drop down menu for “all of the states” contained in your location database as the default. In Widget Pack 4.3.03 the user “selected state” from the Widget Pack will be the default in the search form on the map page. This is the only change made and is a minor tweak. To see how SLP Widgets works, view the developers short video.

Enhanced Search Update

The latest version of Enhanced Search, 4.3.02, adds some new features and rules to allow for easier customization for styling and UI designers to change the search selector layout with the store locator plus plug-in styles. For more information, view the developer’s short video. Changes:

  • Additional identifiers introduced in the sl div wrap
  • Updated code

Directory Builder Update

Directory Builder version 4.3.01 fixes an issue that was occurring on some sites and producing error messages if the Directory Builder add-on was loaded before SLP was loaded in the call stack. An explanation of this change and how Directory Builder works in general can be viewed in the developer’s short video.

All of the videos contained here are also available for later viewing from the Store Locator Plus Documentation page. A “playlist” menu can be seen in the corner of the video package.

If you have questions regarding these updates, please post in the forums and be sure to provide your Plug-in Environment information and review the Posting Guidelines. Premier members may post in the Premier Support forum. We ask the Premier subscribers to also review the posting guidelines. Thanks for using Store Locator Plus.

Store Locator Plus 4.3 Release Schedule

4.3 RC Status Aug 6 AM

Store Locator Plus 4.3 is expected to be released into production during the week of August 17th along with 4.3 versions of all add-on packs.

4.3 RC Status Aug 6 AM
4.3 RC Status Aug 6 AM

Store Locator Plus is now in Release Candidate status.  You can download the prerelease near-production-ready version from the StoreLocatorPlus.com website.   The prerelease version is available at no cost from the store.  If you’ve already added the prerelease version to your account you can login and download; no need to re-purchase.

Most add-on packs are now in RC status as well.   If you have purchased the production version of an add-on pack you can download the prerelease version by logging in to you StoreLocatorPlus.com account.

The more people that can test version 4.3 of the Store Locator Plus plugin and add-on packs the faster it can be released to production.    Prerelease, including RC versions, of the plugin should not be used on a production system without first testing your environment on a staging (testing) copy of your site.  Companies like WP Engine make creating staging copies of your live site very easy.  If you do not employ staging sites as part of your website management strategy you really should consider switching to a hosting company that supports easy site cloning for testing purposes.

Premium Updates for Store Locator Plus

Several premium add-on packs for Store Locator Plus have been updated this afternoon.   Most updates are minor patches with revised hyperlinks, typo fixes, or language file updates.    The patches bump the version of the add-on packs to ensure that all sites are updated to the latest release due to a series of version control system updates that were not being reported to all users.   The heightened security on one of the CSA servers prevented the version reference file from updating, in turn stopping update notices from getting out to all users.

Directory Builder 4.2.10

A Dutch language file update is included in this release.

Users that missed the 4.2.09 update notice will also get the 4.2.09 feature that allows nonces to be disabled for better SEO performance of the directory listings.

Enhanced Map 4.2.07

Minor updates to the hyperlinks and typo fixes.

Users that missed the 4.2.06 and 4.2.05 update notices will get the new Google JSON Style rules feature for maps as well as the custom map markers patch for per-location map markers.

Enhanced Results 4.2.07

Minor updates for hyperlinks and typo fixes.

Users that missed the 4.2.06 update will laos receive the new popup email formatting and CSS rules set in SLP 4.2.48.

Enhanced Search 4.2.09

Not updated today, this release was pushed to production again to ensure all users get the update.   It includes patches for the state and country dropdown selectors.  Also set autocomplete to not fire until at least 3 characters are entered when “address zip autocomplete” is enabled.   Includes the Dutch translation update.

Widget Pack 4.2.04

No update today.  4.2.04 updates the widget pack to work with Enhanced Results 4.2.06+.

Nonce Removal Improves Directory Builder SEO

The Directory Builder add-on pack for Store Locator Plus improves upon search engine optimization (SEO) by allowing site administrators to turn off the nonce system when building the directory hyperlinks.   While this allows for other sites to scrape data it also provides the ability for search engine robots to better index the site.   The new setting allows sites that prefer security and privacy of their location data to leave the default nonce setting enabled while giving the option for sites looking for better SEO to turn off nonces.

What is a nonce?  It is unique number that is appended to hyperlinks every time someone visits a page or submits a form.  It is a built-in WordPress security option that helps verify form posts and hyperlinks are generated from within a site.  These “numbers used once” (nonce) provide mechanisms to prevent site spoofing and scraping.

The latest update to Directory Builder is available immediately from the Charleston Software Associates website.

Directory Builder Adds Page Titles, Filters, and Territories

Dotted Map Banner

Directory Builder 4.2.08 was released today bringing new features to the Store Locator Plus add-on pack.   Dynamic page titles adds another layer of SEO-friendly output to the listings.   Filters make it easier to create heading-separated groups of locations. A new territory field has been added allowing for simple aliases on location listings.

Dynamic Page Titles

Add the [[slp_directory style=”title”]] shortcode to the Directory Builder Landing page title and the plugin will automatically generate an SEO Friendly page title like “Atlanta Locations” or “Charleston Locations” depending on which link is clicked from the listing page.    The title is included in both the H1 tag as the on-page title as well as in the <title> tag which is indexed by most search engines.

List Filters

Add the filter_by clause on your listing page to show locations from a specific country or region.  For example you can use [[slp_directory by=”city” filter_by=”country=’USA'”]] to show a list of locations in the USA only.   Put two of these on a page and get a directory with a “USA Locations” and “International Locations” section.

Territories As Aliases

The latest iteration of Directory Builder adds a new territory field, shared with the location extender, to the location data.   Combine this with the if_blank_use attribute of the listing page shortcode to build aliases for locations.   Add a new “Near Paris” territory and assign that to any location.     If you have filled in the territory field for a location as “Near Paris” the location will be listed as that entry on the listing page.    Leave the territory blank and combine with the if_blank_use=”city” attribute and you can have a listing that shows locations in Boston, Milan, and Near Paris that will change dynamically whenever you edit the territory and city fields for your locations.

Directory Builder Updated to 4.2.02

Spider Web Beads Banner

Directory Builder 4.2.02 was released to the general public today.    The latest update to Directory Builder provides the tools needed to build SEO friendly landing pages for your Store Locator Plus location data.   Build a list of locations in a specific city, state, or country with a simple shortcode and a incoming links page.

This release adds a shortcode specification that allows you to build a directory landing page based on your locator data.   The landing page can be a list of your locations in a specific city, state, or country.    The list format is based on the Results Layout with some modifications that are appropriate for a directory style versus map locator style listing.

The resulting pages are completely dynamic but since they are using the WordPress shortcode system the content appears static to the search engine spiders.   That means you can build region-specific SEO content for your locations with little effort.

Build A Linked List

Use Directory Builder to build a list of cities, states, countries, or any other location property.     Use the [[slp_directory style=”list” by=”city”]] shortcode on any page or post and announce to the world where your locations are.

Director Builder List Page

Use The List To Drive Your Map

Add the locator_page attribute to that shortcode and Directory Builder will automatically search for locations that match the listing.    When a user clicks on the city of Charleston it will bring them to your standard locator page and automatically display all locations in Charleston while retaining the full functionality you have set for your locator page.

Directory Driven Locator Page

Or Use The List To Drive A Directory

Build a new page on your site using the [slp_directory style=”landing_page”] shortcode and make that the destination for your list page links.    Combine that with the [slp_directory style=”title”] shortcode and you can also have an SEO-friendly title on that landing page.   Since the landing page is built dynamically using standard WordPress rendering it is SEO friendly.    Even better, the list is dynamic which means you do not have to re-create the page every time you update your list of locations.

Directory Builder 4.2.02 Prerelease

We Are In This City Banner

Directory Builder 4.2.02 is entering final testing this week.   The update brings new features to the add-on pack including a landing page and title output short codes.   The plugin is currently available in prerelease format to Premier Members.

Director Builder List Page
The same Directory Builder list with two different target pages set with locator_page (or landing_page which is an alias for locator_page). Shortcodes on the landing pages determine what happens next.

Landing Page

The landing page is a new shortcode [[slp_directory style=”landing_page”]] that is meant to serve as a destination for the [[slp_directory style=”list” landing_page=”/city_directory/”]] shortcode.    When serving as a landing page the linked list of locations will auto-render a list of all locations using a slightly-modified the Results Layout format.    The page is not AJAX driven which helps generating SEO-ready content from your locations database.    Since the list is dynamic the pages do not need to be re-generated when adding or updating locations.

Directory Builder Landing Page On Twenty Thirteen

Title Output

Along with the landing page there is a new title shortcode [[slp_directory style=”title”]] to display the search field and filter value for a landing page.     Adding <h1>[[slp_directory style=”title”]]</h1> on a landing page will show something like “City Charleston” when a user clicks a link on a Directory Builder list page using [[slp_directory style=”list” by=”city”]] and selects the Charleston entry.

New Directory Builder 4.2 Add On Pack Is Out

SLP Press Banner With Arrow Logo

Store Locator Plus  has a new add-on pack,  Directory Builder 4.2.

Directory Builder provides various tools for building directory listings based on Store Locator Plus locations. The listings are dynamic, built in real time from the current location data. Add a new location in a new city and the city directory listing updates automatically.

The initial release provides a new short code, slp_directory, that builds a list of a specific location property such as a list of cities, states, or countries. The list can be linked directly to a specific locator page. The links to the locator page set the basic search parameters for the locator which means a single locator page can serve as the landing point for the directory listings.

Directory Page Front End
A dynamic city listing of locations is auto-generated with the slp_directory short code.

If you display a list of cities and link it to your default locator page the links will take over control of the initial map rendering. When following a directory link from the list-of-cities page the map will be set to immediately show locations for every location in the given city.

Directory Driven Locator Page
When users click the links on the directory page they end up on the locator page with an automated city search listing.

Additional features are on the development schedule and are expected to be released in the next few weeks.    Watch the CSA news feed for more info on upcoming enhancements to this add-on.

Store Locator Plus 4.2 Release Imminent

store locator plus banner

Store Locator Plus 4.2.01 is entering final testing this week.   The latest patch adds more built-in support for add-on packs which will allow for a lighter footprint for any add-on packs using SLP 4.2 base classes.   This change should have little impact on users of Store Locator Plus but paves the way for “lighter” and more consistent add-on pack experiences.

Store Locator Plus 4.2 has been fully tested with the latest release of WordPress 4.0 which is currently thought to be the last update to WordPress before 4.0 enters final release in the next few weeks.

Location Extender 4.2

Location Extender is another new add-on pack based on the Store Locator Plus 4.2 add-on system.    This add-on pack adds a half-dozen new fields to the Store Locator Plus location data.    Intro text, year established, county, region, district, and territory are among the new fields that have been added.   Output those fields using Store Pages templates or Enhanced Results results layout customization.

Pro Pack 4.2

Pro Pack has been updated to use the new Store Locator Plus 4.2 add-on system.   The changes reduce the memory and disk footprint of the plugin and will provide a more consistent experience.    Pro Pack 4.2 has an updated reports interface that eliminates the custom reporting page.  This will make it easier to add features and extend the reporting system for Pro Pack in future releases.    A new CSV import option that loads CSV files from remote FTP and HTTP sources is expected to be available for the Pro Pack 4.2 release.

Premier Subscriptions

Store Locator Plus 4.2.01 and the add-on packs are available to Premier Subscription members in prerelease format on the downloads page.     General public releases are expected in the next 10 days or less.

If you do not have a Premier Subscription and are contemplating getting on that program you may want to do so now.  Once the new add-on packs are released prices will be going up for Premier Subscription members.   Lock in your pricing now and get all future add-on packs, access to prerelease software, and access to the Premier forum for faster support responses.    Subscriptions can be cancelled without impacting already-downloaded/already-installed add-on packs.

New Locator Features Coming Soon

Map With Angels Banner

In between fixing Windows laptops and Microsoft servers, followed immediately by setting up a new Apple laptops and Amazon AWS servers, I have managed to write some code.    What have I been working on?    Mostly getting caught up on overdue paid customization projects.  The BIG ONE right now is an automated city directory builder.    That project has precipitated some changes.

Here are some other changes coming soon to Store Locator Plus.

Store Locator Plus 4.2

This is a big version update without a lot of new “on-the-surface” features.    Some of the biggest changes are “under the covers” and deal with the add on pack subsystem.    There are now a dozen add-on packs from CSA as well as several from other authors.    More authors are interested in writing add-on packs.    While many follow the “general template” of  other add-on packs there has been no standard to follow.

SLP 4.2 adds a standard set of base classes on which new add-on packs will be built.  Older add-on packs will be upgraded to also use this new standard set of base classes.

What does this mean for you?  A faster Store Locator Plus installation that uses less memory and less disk.   Since a lot of the core pieces of the add-on packs will reside in a single set of code there is far less redundancy.  Less redundancy means a smaller footprint.   A smaller footprint leads to a faster site.

In addition to being smaller and faster, the add-on packs will become more resilient.   They will have fewer inconsistencies.  They will be able to communicate with the base plugin and the other add-on packs efficiently and become more intelligent about “what the other parts are doing”.   This creates a more durable application with fewer problems.   It will also allow for more rapid development which leads to more features and add-on packs.

A note about the SLP 4.2 update:

The 4.2 release of Store Locator Plus has some changes that impacts compatibility with some add on packs.   If you have not already upgraded the Pro Pack and Janitor you should do so and read the blog post about it.   If you do not upgrade to the “interim release” that works with both SLP 4.1 and the upcoming SLP 4.2 upgrade then you may break your site.    The other option is to wait until SLP 4.2 comes out and prior to upgrading deactivate & delete the Pro Pack and Janitor, upgrade to SLP 4.2, then upgrade to the LATEST VERSION of Pro Pack and Janitor.

Directory Builder 4.2

Directory Builder is a new add-on pack that augments a paid customization project for a Store Locator Plus client.   The Directory Builder brings a suite of tools to the Store Locator Plus installation that are designed to help guide your users to your locations and build SEO-friendly content.    The current iteration of the add-on pack brings a new [[slp_directory]] short code to your Store Locator Plus installation.     This short code can be used to build a list of location properties, such as a list of cities or a list of countries, that you can display on your site.     Any of the Store Locator Plus fields can be displayed on the list.    The count of locations that have that property can also be displayed on the list.

Directory City List Link With Count
Directory: a city list with links and counts. Version 4.1.00 (beta).

In addition, “intelligent locator links” can be added when using the city, state, or country property as the list field.   These 3 list types use the same concept as the discrete search, available in Enhanced Search, to bring up your locator page and auto-search for the city, state, or country that the user clicked on from the directory list.   To prevent spoofing and reduce page scraping, the links are automatically verified using the nonce system in WordPress to ensure the links came from within your site.    When a validated directory link is used to reach your locator page the search will automatically enter a “directory search mode”.   Directory search mode turns on immediate mode to show results as soon as the page is rendered, turns off the location sensor, ignores the radius setting,  and performs a discrete (exact match) search to show all locations that are in the specified city, state, or zip.

More features will be coming to Directory Builder.  Keep an eye on the blog, product pages, and documentation for more details.

Directory Builder requires SLP 4.2.

Enhanced Search 4.2

While working the the Directory Builder, Enhanced Search has also had some updates that address some of the address search functional issues.     With the new update to Enhanced Search the locator map will now go into immediate mode and show results as soon as the map is drawn.   The use of the address in the URL will also turn off the location sensor automatically.     To enable addresses in the URL you need to turn on the “Allow Address In URL” setting under the General Settings tab.

Enhanced Search 4.2 requires SLP 4.2.
