Recent Updates to Store Locator Plus 4.6.4

Store Locator Plus version 4.6.4 fixed the zoom settings, the plug-in tabs “save changes” and the back-end UI.

The change in the back end user interface will not be noticeable to most users. The naming of sections and tabs and settings now will use programmatic slugs instead of the plain text names. This allows the settings translations in different languages to remain intact even if language files have not been updated. This means future updates to Store Locator Plus, Power, Experience, and Premier add-ons will no longer lose their settings tabs. Another behind the scenes development is populating the plug-in and add-ons with “smart options” settings. To learn more please watch the developer’s brief You Tube.

Store Locator Plus

You will notice a new look in your admin panel of Store Locator Plus in Version 4.6.2 .  Featuring  a new sidebar on the admin pages for the settings tabs and the locations tab.

Version 4.6.2 locations info sidebar added
Version 4.6.2 locations info sidebar added

Important fixes: SLP version 4.6.2  fixes the “white screen” error on sites running the older version of WordPress 4.4 and/or  Multi-site users running WordPress 4.6.

Enhancements:

  •  Show admin help settings in a new sidebar to make it easier to see what each setting does.
  •  Show location details preview in right sidebar on manage locations page.
  • Added links to direct documentation pages for various settings.
  •  Implement a new slp_get_text_string filter for add-ons to manage text strings.
  • Additional hard-coded gettext strings accessible to the text manager.
  •  Don’t load the SLP overhead on the WordPress admin heartbeat since SLP doesn’t  require  “heartbeat” processing. Wouldn’t it be nice if all plugins did that?

Fixes:

  • Multisite installs – upgrading SLP fixes “not an array” error that would cause white screen on upgrade      for sites using WP 4.6+
  •  Fix stripslashes_from_strings_only() undefined function for sites running old WordPress (you really should update to WordPress 4.4+ for security reasons if nothing else).
  •  Recalculate initial distance for all locations on global center map at change.

Changes

Performance update: Drop adminUI create_InputElement() method.  (Note : This may break pre-4.2  Legacy Add Ons, you must  upgrade to the Legacy add-on  latest version release. 4.3 or higher or downgrade SLP to earlier version)

  •  Experience will need to be updated to 4.6.2 when updating SLP to 4.6.2

SLP version releases, Power 4.5.10 , Premier 4.5.10 while in flight

I hope everyone is enjoying the balmy summer weather. The developer and author of Store Locator Plus has been very busy with updates  in preparation for meeting his MYSLP team.  I am sure he will have some interesting stories to tell when he gets back.   He hasn’t been idle!  While pond hopping he managed to revamp and publish   Store locator Plus 4.5.10, which we hope provides better information on how to actually get that pesky Google API, browser , server console key  or whatever they are calling it these days, into the right location in the SLP General settings.  Thanks to a user question, apparently the linked instructions under the SLP INFO tab may not have been as user friendly as hoped.

Other updates were to the Power Add-on and Premier Add-on.    Premier 4.5.10 was released while the author was mid flight somewhere over the Atlantic.218px-Fly00488_-_Flickr_-_NOAA_Photo_Library

The Power Add-on and Premier Add-on were not playing nice together when it came to icons and map markers assigned to the Category Manager and settings.   Thanks to a recent Premier Subscriber for revealing the mismatching icons issue and for patiently working with SLP while it was resolved

Stay tuned for a future update; I am  hoping this  will  help us all keep our versions  straight,( this blogger included who has told people to update to a non-existent version of an add-on, causing mayhem and confusion in her wake)  has been requested from numerous loyal customers.  Yes, you asked for it , he heard you, and  coming to your account dashboard in the not too distant future, being able to view the version add-on that is available to you under your account downloads.

In the meantime, please check your versions under the Support tab on the home page.

* Enhancement: More robust settings upgrade system for users migrating from older to newer releases.

* Enhancement: Settings upgrade system is not loaded into memory for new installs. Improves performance and memory consumption on initial installation/activation.

* Change: Find button images are no longer supported. Use CSS styling to modify the standard text button if you want custom image buttons or downgrade to SLP 4.2.67.
* Change: Move UX / Results / Website Label to a serialized option, remove it from the JavaScript parser as it is now handled on the AJAX Handler backend.
* Change: Remove custom zoom_level settings, make it a standard serialized option.
* Change: refactor much of the slp.js namespace and classes to follow current JavaScript best practices. Eliminate class/object overhead on some simple function-only references.
* Change: No longer checks for , and deactivates, Super Extendo add-on pack. If you are using that add-on pack you should not be. Bad things happen.

* Fix: Apostrophe in manage locations search.

* Note: Some add-on packs will need to be upgraded to their latest 4.3 release to work properly with SLP 4.3.

Premier Members

Premier Members will also be getting some new features with the 4.3 release.    The new features will only be available to Premier Members with an active subscription  so they can download that latest Premier Plugin release.

There will be new features added on a regular basis that will be exclusive to the active subscription holders in good standing. So far they have been given a sneak preview and use of Pagination and Cluster Maps.

The focus for the July release of the Premier Plugin has been on “Google Address Guessing”.   Google Address Guessing is what happens when a user enters an address into the address box on your locations map page.    When a user clicks on the Find Locations button, the address they typed into the address box is sent to Google as a query.   Google uses a “proprietary” algorithm (this means they don’t share the behind the scenes information with other entities, private or commercial) to decide which address the user “meant” when they typed in something like “Camden”.

Google does a “best guess” based on popular searches or just what they think you mean, or some other obscure logic…. and sometimes they are wrong, at least for your search preference.  Example:

    Camden

Is that “Camden, NJ, USA” or the Camden as in a Borough of London?  Turns out that even for users in the United States , the Search using Google’s mapping API decided you meant Camden, UK.

"Ok Google...but I don't have anything on my locations page " remotely near the UK. Could you give me a list of Camdens?"
“Ok Google…but I don’t have anything on my locations page ” remotely near the UK. Could you give me a list of Camdens?”

Several new settings are introduced in the Premier Plug-in that will help you influence “Google’s guess”.

Tagalong v0.7 Released

Charleston SC, March 14th 2013 –  Charleston Software Associates released Tagalong 0.7 today, in conjunction with the Store Locator Plus 3.9.2 release.  This a minor release update according to the company.  Minor release updates focus on behind-the-scenes improvements in performance and memory and minor, if any, user experience changes.

The primary focus of this release was Store Locator Plus 3.9 compatibility.   There have been significant internal changes within Tagalong to leverage some of the new object oriented features of Store Locator Plus 3.9.2.   The plugin was also updated to eliminate the requirement of using the Store Pages premium add-on that was necessary in the past 3 releases of Tagalong.  While the Store Pages add-on pack will still provide some extra interface and location management options, it is not longer required to add some of the extended features for this plugin.

Tagalong is still officially in beta release as the entire feature set has not been completed.  Work is expected to continue this month on moving toward a formal 1.0 production release with added features.

You can learn what is new via the SLP 3.9 Release Notes page.

About Tagalong

Tagalong is a premium add-on for Store Locator Plus that brings more advanced store categorization and customization to the base Store Locator Plus package.   One of the primary features in the beta release is the ability to add custom map markers to the on-map search results.    The plugin uses the built-in WordPress categorization system, which brings more advanced management controls than the proprietary “tags” system that comes along with the Pro Pack.   Tagalong is slated to completely replace the Pro Pack tags feature at some point in the future.    Tagalong is slated to become the primary add-on pack for extending location data in both search results and custom SEO-based Store Pages.

About Store Locator Plus

Store Locator Plus is an advanced system for managing multiple physical locations via a fully integrated WordPress solution. You can add details such as a store description, hours, a website address, an email address, and tags for each location and then display those locations easily on any page using a shortcode. The location search form and Google Map will automatically be displayed.

Advanced customization is available via the settings interface in the admin panel. The map can be customized via the admin panel to fit better on your site by allowing for different sizes, map types (terrain, satellite, standard views), and default location settings. The search form can be customized to show or hide a country pulldown, a city and state pulldown, and tag search fields.  can also re-label every entry field and can opt to enable pop-up email forms to help reduce spam.

Store Pages v3.9 Released

Charleston SC, February 21st 2013 –  Charleston Software Associates released a completely re-constructed version of the Store Pages product this afternoon.   In conjunction with the release of Store Locator Plus version 3.9, the new Store Pages version 3.9 product takes advantages of new internal components to provide a better SEO management experience for Store Locator Plus users.     Store Pages is a premium add-on pack available for the free Store Locator Plus location management system.   Pricing for the 3.9 release is set at $45.    Existing licensed users of prior versions can request a free upgrade to the Store Pages 3.9 release.

The new version of Store Pages creates several oft-requested features.   Custom page addresses and the ability to manipulate the generated page formats are two of the biggest additions to the new release.   Several minor features have also been added to the update.

Site administrators will now have the ability to customize the URL where their store pages will be rendered, adding the SEO impact of the plugin.   The default /store-page/store-name web address can now be modified to better fit the site.  For example a list of doctor offices can now read /doctor/location-name .

Store Pages also includes a new page template engine that offers live dynamic data elements.   Store Pages now read the store location database in real-time.  This is a departure from prior releases where a page would need to be re-created every time location data was updated.  The same template editor feature also allows the site administrator to change the layout of the generated page to suite their tastes.   A completely free-form HTML syntax with data placeholders, in the form of WordPress standard shortcodes, allows the site administrator to build the page exactly as they want to see it including embedding maps, directions, images or other site specific data.

You can learn what is new via the SLP 3.9 Release Notes page.

About Store Pages

Store Pages is a premium add-on for the free Store Locator Plus location management system.  The Store Pages add-on creates independent pages the WordPress site that contain a complete description of the store location.   The add-on package provides for a convenient way to build a detailed store directory while improving the site search engine presence, commonly referred to as Search Engine Optimization (SEO).   Interest in the relatively new Store Pages add-on has made it the second-most popular add-on pack for Store Locator Plus, second only to enterprise-class Pro Pack.
