Enhanced Results Patch Fixes Rank Issue

Charleston WordCamp Directory Map Banner

Enhanced Results version 4.1.14 was released today with several important bug fixes.   Issues with the extended data fields for hte rank and featured setting have been resolved.   The ZERO rank is now considered “unranked” the same as the null or blank entries to fix location sorting issues when changing a previously ranked entry to a blank value (WordPress stores this as a zero in the database).

In addition the Swedish language files have been added to the product and the image display on the manage locations has been moved out of Enhanced Result into the base plugin.

Store Locator Plus Update

GM for Work Banner

Version 4.2.10 of the Store Locator Plus plugin for WordPress was released today.

The recent update adds settings to enable Google Maps for Work clients to use their client ID to enable their access to the Google Enterprise servers.  For clients that have purchased the annual license from Google the new settings will provide access to the higher throughput services provided by Google.  The enterprise-level services includes up to 100,000 geocoding requests per day on a high throughput communication channel.

SLP 4.2.10 General Settings Server
Version 4.2.10 General Server Settings with Google Business License settings for Google Maps for Work clients.

Charleston Software Associates is the first, and possibly the only, Google OEM License plugin for WordPress.   New services are in development that will allow any Store Locator Plus customer to purchase higher-limit blocks of geocoding services directly from CSA via the Pro Pack add-on.   The new pre-request service is scheduled to be launched by January 2015 if production schedules remain on track.

The 4.2.10 includes a fix to the geocoding service which now utilizes the map domain setting under the User Experience / Map tab to request geolocation info from Google.

A patch to the SLP 4.2 add-on pack framework fixes a bug that caused excess memory consumption.

Version 4.2.10 will now show not only installed versions of your add-on packs under the Info / Plugin Environment tab but will also report any newer versions of add-on packs that may be available from the CSA servers.   Accurate upgrade reporting will require the add-on packs having already been upgraded to version 4.2, making this feature more useful for forthcoming upgrades.    The new feature does not rely on the built-in WordPress upgrade testing process which does not always query third party servers in an efficient manner and often misses update notifications.

Store Locator Plus 4.2.08 Released

Charleston WordCamp Directory Map Banner

Store Locator Plus 4.2.08 was released earlier this week.   This is a minor update that addresses an issue with the JavaScript communication handler that was preventing subsequent searches from returning results when discrete location filters were in use.  For example a map that displays only a country drop down and find button would execute the search for the first country selected.  Selecting a new country and submitting the search would not execute the search.

Store Locator Plus 4.2.08 is available for download from the WordPress Plugin Directory.    Users with Store Locator Plus installed can upgrade from within their WordPress admin panel.

SLP Enhanced Results Patch, Prerelease

Colorful Old Map Banner

The Enhanced Results add-on for Store Locator Plus has been patched with the prerelease available immediately.    The latest *.12 release fixes an extended data error when featured location sort orders are selected.   Some installations end up with a corrupted option marking extended data availability; this patch works around that corruption.

A patch is on the way for the base Store Locator Plus plugin, version 4.2.06+ that further addresses the extended data option corruption to eliminate the issue for any add-on pack that uses extended data.

Prerelease products are not available to Premier Members and for customers that have purchased the add-on pack from the CSA website.      Prerelease products are not meant to be used on production systems as they have not been fully tested.

Enhanced Results Update 4.1.11

Fuller Projection Banner

A patch for Enhanced Results has been released to the general public today.

The patch fixes a problem with some installs that have “Always Show” set for the featured results listings while not having extended data sets in place.    The new release ensures the extended data is added during activation.  If something prevents the extended data from being added the add-on fixes an issue where results are not returned.

Other updates are minor including a new Dutch (nl_NL) translation, as well as new Spanish and Serbian translations.

Starting today, users that have purchased Enhanced Results will have access to the production and prerelease (not for production systems) versions of the Enhanced Results add-on pack via their My Account / Downloads page.    This provides an opportunity for all users to participate in the prerelease/beta-testing cycle before an update is put into production.

Store Locator Plus 3.11.15 Patch

Store Locator Plus Homepage Banner

A quick patch today for Store Locator Plus.   After receiving several messages this afternoon about people upgrading from much older versions and “losing their map markers” I realized the arrow.png and marker.png map icons were dropped from the product some time ago without replacing them with newer icons.

While I personally think those markers are hideous, some people want things to never change and don’t agree with my thoughts on design.  Fair enough, I’m certainly not a user interface expert.

Version 3.11.15 brings those graphics back, hopefully eliminating at least one of the pain points when upgrading the plugin.

The other patches?   Hopefully resolving the stripslashes expects a string warning and a less prominent “locationID” index not set warning.

There are no functional changes in this release.

Work continues on the Store Locator Plus 4.0 release.   I’ll post more updates on that soon.  I am currently working on overhauling the “info bubble” that shows up when people click on a map marker.    The new release of Enhanced Map will allow the contents to be completely manipulated via the admin panel, following a format similar to the newer “Enhanced Results shortcodes” for changing the output below the map.   Videos and commentary will be posted as I get that feature closer to “fully baked”.

Store Locator Plus 3.11.14

store locator plus banner

Store Locator Plus 3.11.14 was released today.    This is another minor patch while the bulk of development remains focused on the 4.0 release along with related updates to the add-on packs.     4.0 has a primary objective of providing far more control over the user experience without hacking code or creating convoluted CSS rules.      Skinning the maps, search forms, and results will be far easier in the upcoming release.

As for the 3.11.14 patch there are two minor updates:

  • United Arab Emirates added as a map domain.

  • The results string processor has been made less restrictive which allows users of Enhanced Results to select ANY field available to a map marker using the {18.<fieldname>} syntax.  It has also been extended to support the upcoming Tagalong 1.1 release that is Store Locator Plus 4.0 compatible.  This release provides access to location category metadata via upcoming tagalongdata.<category_field> accessors.  This means [slp_location tagalongdata.name] will be possible to output the category name in the results.      I’m using it for a customization project to add alt/title tags to the map markers in a 4.0 preview release.    You’ll see more on that soon.

Store Locator Plus 3.11.12

store locator plus banner

Another patch was released on Store Locator Plus yesterday as work continues on the 4.0 major update I am trying to get out this month.

The latest patch fixes the “check all” feature on Manage Locations, ensuring only the location check boxes are marked not the Tagalong or any other check boxes that may come up.   The change also uses a more efficient jQuery call to check the boxes.

The Philippines has been added as a new country on the Google Maps selection.

A defunct call to a long-gone PHP script for the search form rendering was removed.  That will save a disk request and shave a micro-second or two off the page request every time someone visits the locator page on a site.

In the meantime work continues on the add-on packs, a lot of admin interface changes, and some more code clean  up as I wrap up a customization job for a customer and put a lot of new features in the Store Locator Plus 4.0 and related add-on packs.    Once that job is done I will focus on getting the beta release of SLP 4.0 and the add-on packs out there and start the next customization job.

Store Locator Plus 4.0 / Paid Add-On Pack Upgrades

For those of you who’ve been on the fence about ordering add-on packs, now is the time.   When Store Locator Plus 4.0 comes out ALL add-on packs will require an upgrade to work with the new version.    Those upgrades will be PAID upgrades for all customers.     I am planning on putting out a discount code for recent customers.   I’ve not yet decided how that will work, but I’m leaning towards something like this:

  • Purchased the add-on pack since January 1st 2013: new version of the same add-on pack is free
  • Purchased up to 1 year ago (August 1st 2012+) : 50% off
  • Older purchases will need to re-purchase the new add-on packs.

For those that do not want to pay for add-on upgrades the best option is to NOT UPGRADE THE BASE PLUGIN.   The other option is to disable the add-on packs as most (all) of the add-on packs will break when 4.0 is released.

Please note that the base plugin upgrade will always be free per the WordPress directory listing rules.    Upgrading from Store Locator Plus 3.X to 4.X  can be done at no-cost.  Just be wary of any add-on packs you’ve purchased as they will not function the same way (or at all) if you only upgrade the base plugin to 4.X without upgrading the main product.

What Happened To Subscriptions?

I have been looking for a good subscription module for WooCommerce or WordPress that works well with product downloads like the add-on packs but there are NONE that work well.  I found several that are nearly 100% manual input, some that do not work with restricting downloads (it is an all-or-none approach) and my own work on a proper WooCommerce download/subscription module was side-lined by the recent customization work.      Thus the “Enterprise Subscription” with a one-time setup fee + small ($10) monthly downloads is not going to be ready on time for the 4.0 release.

I hope to find something by the time the next major upgrade is ready (next summer?) so that customers will have a less expensive option with a steady monthly payment versus one big “upgrade everything fee”.

Maybe if enough customization, support, and premium add-on sales come in future upgrades can remain free.   Right now the only viable way to fund future development is to have paid upgrades when notable improvements are made to the base product and premium add-on packs.

You Backed Up Your Site, Didn’t You?

Now is the perfect time to remind the 50% of you that do not do this:  BACKUP YOUR SITE.    I strongly recommend doing so with a WordPress specific backup solution like VaultPress.     That way when you (or your customer) clicks the “upgrade now” button when 4.0 comes out and all your add-on packs break you can simply restore the site (or just the plugin files themselves) to the version that was installed prior to that momentary lapse of judgement.

For those of you that plan on upgrading the add-on packs, you have less to worry about in that regard.  I know you are already backing up with a WordPress backup solution just in case.

Store Locator Plus Patched version 3.11.11

store locator plus banner

Somewhere in the midst of all the edits for the upcoming Store Locator Plus 4.0 release and the current 3.11.X releases, I managed to break the edit locations functionality.    The patch was fairly simple and should have taken a day to fix, but two things conspired to make it a week-long patch.   First, I had an “offline weekend” planned with the family this past weekend and did not catch the bug before we left.   Second, I started to check email and bug reports the day I got back.  I found the problem but life immediately intervened.  Within moments of starting up my development environment I found myself dealing with a flooded house.    It was only 1″ of water but was enough to cover the floors in 2 bedrooms, the living room, and the kitchen.

Normally I take time a break from the computer work and tackle my “honey-do” list around the house.   The past 48 hours I’ve been taking short breaks away from the “house crisis mode” and getting on the computer to knock out the patches and answer some questions in the forums.    Between the computer work I’ve been busy with insurance adjusters, moving furniture, deciding what goes in the trash and what can be salvaged.    It has not been fun, but at least it is just a nuisance, nobody was injured and other than living in a house that will be partly under demolition and reconstruction all should work out fine.

Living Room Water Feature
Living Room Water Feature – one of 4 rooms with an inch of water on the floor. :/

It will, however, slow down my online responses and coding for the next 10 days while we recover.

In the meantime please continue to report issues or ask questions in the forums.  I will address problems and questions as quickly as I can.

Enhanced Search Patched v0.7.1

Enhanced Search Banner

The Enhanced Search premium add-on pack for Store Locator Plus was updated today with a patch that fixes the search by name feature.    This is a minor patch and should not cause any compatibility issues for users running the latest version of Store Locator Plus.

An overview of the Enhanced Search feature is presented in the following video:
